Obituary of Barbara E. Mann

Barbara Edmonds Mann died peacefully at home on May 11, 2018 at the age of 86.

Barbara was born in Mobile, Alabama and grew up in Washington, D.C.  She graduated from Howard University and received her M.A. at Peabody College (Vanderbilt University).

 

She and her husband, N. Horace Mann, Jr. DDS (deceased), made their home in Nashville where she and Horace raised their children Kathy and N. Horace (Skipper), III (deceased). She taught and was a career counselor at Fisk University.  In 1977 Mayor Richard Fulton appointed her to the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education where she was responsible for overseeing the integration of the public schools.

 

Barbara is survived by her daughter Kathy Fields (Walter), six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

 

Family visitation and viewing will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00a.m with the services following at 12 noon at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 949 T S Jackson Ave. Nashville, TN.

 

The family would prefer donations in lieu of flowers be made to the N. Horace Mann, Jr. D.D.S. and Barbara E. Mann, M.A. Scholarship Fund, Office of Alumni Affairs, Meharry Medical College, 1005 Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Blvd, Nashville, TN 37208.
