Judy Jacobs posted a condolence

Many years ago I was trying to help one of the clerical staff at Hill School. Her car was malfunctioning, and though she had asked the teacher at the automotive shop to have his students look at it, the man had forgotten. So there we were, after school had closed, having nothing but a teaspoon and some paper clips. Then a car drove slowly along the drive. "Look! It's Pat's husband! He'll know what to do; he's a man!" Dr. Mitchell got out of the car, realized that his wife, having borrowed a car belonging to one of their sons, was not needing a ride. Assessing the situation instantly, Dr. Mitchell said to me, "Judy, the first thing you need to know is that professional people do not do this kind of work."
I will long remember Dr. Reavis Mitchell for his wry humor, his elegant manner, and his mastery of all things historical.
To Dr. Patricia Mitchell and their sons, as well as all those who mourn, may your grief be bearable; may your memories be sweet. May you be comforted in knowing that those who gave the most are missed most sorely. May you be soothed by the company of those whose company you seek, and may those whom you don't want just keep their noses out of the way.

My condolences to the Mitchell Family. I can remember talking to my father, Wade H. Thomas, Sr., prior to his death, to find out that he and Mr. Reavis Mitchell, Sr. were good friends. A couple of my brothers attended school at St. Vincent de Paul School with Dr. Reavis, Jr. I treasure all of the Mitchell Family as church members at St. Vincent.
I am truly sorry for your loss and our loss of Dr. Mitchell, Jr., as a treasure.

This man saved my life . I was told by a certain professor that due to my pregnancy , I should drop out of school . She then proceeded to tell
me I could no longer attend her class without permission from the Dean. I wobbled in Dr. Mitchell ‘s office, explained the situation and proceeded to tell him I refuse to drop out . I will not repeat his exact words ...but he did tell me to get out of his office and go to class . I graduated because he believed in me when other professors counted me out . I am a Proud Fisk Alumni because of him. He will be truly missed !!!

Dr. Reavis L. Michell Jr. served as Dean of the Humanities and Behavioral Social Science at Fisk University and he often helped me in my role as Department Chair to pull back from situations that he saw as needing a lighter touch. He would say “ Wait Bracks, let me see what I can do.” He would come back a few days later, come to my office, share some wisdom, have me submit paper work and say, “We’re good.” He was an effective problem solver, which made him a respected administrator. There is no question that he did all he could for our students and clearly saw them as our future. He shared that enthusiasm and encouragement to students as well as to my son, Bobby. Dr. Mitchell cherished, and was so proud of his students/Fisk students. This level of caring was also a reflection of the love and pride he had for his family. He often shared the successes of his sons with me and we often swapped grandparent stories. Dr. Mitchell was a person who was exemplary of the positives that we need in this world; kind, confident, knowledgeable and willing to serve. An honorable African-American man. He will be greatly missed by All.
My sincerest condolences to the Mitchell and Walker Family.
Sincerely, Dr. Lean’tin Bracks, Professor of African-American Literature, Retired/Fisk University
