Sam and I worked together on the Nashville Urban League Board. He was the smartest, kindest and most genuine person I ever had the privilege of working with. He loved his family and his Nashville community. He made Nashville better and more inclusive. We have truly lost a giant of a man.

Dear Karen,
I was saddened to hear of Sam's passing. As you know, our friendship spanned some 60 years! I have many, many fond memories of our lives in Oklahoma -- where Sam and I roomed together briefly at Oklahoma State University -- New Jersey, New York, and of course, Tennessee. He will be missed! Blessings to you and your family.

My wife, Diane, and I are humbled to speak if our sense of loss of our friend and highly admired hero Sam Howard. Sam's lovely and extraordinarily gracious wife Karen was the first person Diane and I met upon our return to Nashville in 1974 after we had completed three years of graduate study and work in Boston and New York after our graduations from Fisk and Meharry respectively. We would come to know this unique family well and we would often enjoy their hospitality at their wonderful annual party at their home. Sam was a special person by any meaningful criteria. He was a highly accomplished business titan, yet he was warm and welcoming and modest in his relaxed demeanor. I was fortunate to have had a number one-on-one conversation with Sam and they invariably revealed a sensitive and grounded person of extraordinary foresight, knowledge and skill. As a mind-picker by nature, I would fuel his conversations and ask him questions non-stop, much like a student would, actually. Sam was generous in his modest "lessons" and I was so proud to listen to a master. He once mention that he was deeply involved in the naming of the Nashville "Titans". That is the least of the many accomplishment that I was to discover in these conversations.
We can all be pleased to have benefited by the contributions of Sam Howard to the city and the Afro-American community. My personal friendship will be forever cherished. My deepest respect and condolences go to Karen and, of course their super children, Sam Jr., and Anica.

William P. Graham posted a condolence

Subject: Re: Sam Howard Remembrance
We have lost a wonderful friend and high achiever in the passing of Sam Howard. Sam was quietly self confident, a man who impressed by competency and accomplishments. Our founders, President Lyndon Johnson and John Gardner’s expectations for us included going back to our communities and making them better places by virtue of our good works. Sam epitomized that sense of commitment and Nashville honored him as Philanthropist of the Year one year, and Man of the Year the next.
As a Class, we did not see as much of Sam as we would have liked during our Fellowship year, because Sam spent most of his year at his UN assignment in New York. Sam came to DC when his work allowed, and the Graham’s were honored with numerous stays at our home by Sam, his spirited and accomplished wife Karan and their two young children, Anica and Sam Jr., who were close to the three Graham daughters in age and personality.
Our loss became Nashville’s gain. Sam was a gifted financial expert and used that gift to acquire ownership of radio stations, a large regional health network, hotel and other investments, after serving as Vice President of Finance or Treasurer of several of Nashville’s hospital empires. But his talents and contributions were national as well—including helping to shape the future of Medicare and the National Urban League. Sam hosted our Class for one of our most enjoyable reunions in Nashville, where his good works and civic pride were abundantly on display.
We nominated Sam to receive the highest award the White House Fellows confers to our members and were pleased to see him selected as a Legacy of Leadership Award recipient. What a role model you have been to us all, Sam. We miss you dearly.
