Memories of Tosh, my Pumpkin Head
It started as a summer job, a chance to escape rural Alabama. Who knew I would be blessed to meet this little big-headed, big-haired, cinnamon boy! He was all face/head and smiles. He had the best disposition of any baby I'd ever seen. He was always smiling, always agreeable (and I don't remember him throwing up on me).
He was my first true experience of pure love, no conditions. He loved that rural Alabama place I couldn't get away from fast enough. I thought, "How could he love that place?" Life passed. As we both found ourselves trying to grow up, I never knew him to be any different from that little pumpkin head who was all smiles - a true prize, gifted to the world.
Several years ago, I sent him a writing I found that made me think of him:
"From One Pumpkin to Another -
A woman was asked by a coworker, 'What's it like to be a Christian?'
The coworker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.'
God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you.
Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.
He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.
Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see."
I liked this enough to send it to my most beloved Pumpkin Head. "SEE," he responded, "I knew it all along. Being a 'pumpkin head' is a good thing."
Over the years, I received a number of surprise gifts, cards, and emails.
"Hello Aunt Bett. Thank you for the reminder of God's strength and grace." "Hello Aunt Bett. The beautiful smiles of the NOLA ladies were missed at this year's reunion."
Signed Pumpkin Head/From the Pumpkin Heads
That's the Pumpkin Head I knew. I will miss his beautiful smiling face in this world. I believe the Lord has a much kinder and gentler place for him to dwell. I hope the Lord will place him in charge of the sweet, kind, smiling angels.
When we go to rejoin our families, he will be there to welcome us home - promoted from the pumpkin patch, to God's beautiful hand-grown garden.
Forever, Aunt Bett

Tosh, my nephew, my lil brother, I wish you could hear me. You were a patient, gentle and kind person, and such a great listener. You lived in the city but connected wholeheartedly with your country roots. We shared some great summers and forged many memories. We even tried to build our own swimming pool, digging a mud hole, hoping Daddy (Grandaddy) would cement it for us. He never did; but it didn’t stop us from sitting in the mud hole during those hot summer days in Alabama. You referred to me as ‘the teacher.’ I taught you how to drive, even though you tried with two left feet.
You accepted Yeshua as your savior, and I am certain salvation is yours. Although I am deeply saddened by your passing; I find some comfort knowing you’re ‘at home’ and in peace.
To my sister, Tut, and brother-in-law, Walter, I can’t imagine your pain. We may never understand what the almighty GOD allows. I offer my deepest condolences to you and the family. Keep the faith in Yahweh, who will keep you in perfect peace.

This candle is lit to honor the life of your dear son, Walter, who transitioned to his heavenly home. I can recall the wonderful posts he made on FB a our his wonderful Mother and how much her loved and appreciated her. In one post he mentioned the old Motown records y’all played around the house. His postings were evident of the great Love you all gave to each other and your children.

If tears could build a stairway, and memories were a lane, I would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye; you were gone before I knew it and only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness and my secret tears still flow what it mean to lose you, no one will ever know. Since you will never be forgotten, I pledge to you today, a place within my heart is where you will always stay.
I will never forget your lovely smile and the awesome job you always did at our family reunions ... man I love and miss you!

I grew up in a crazy close family- raised by my grandma, until i was old enough for grade school. Grandma had 15 kids herself, mom was the "7th Blessing", and somehow there was love and time and space for me!......
Every summer the cousins would descend on the family homestead, like migrating monarchs led by God. I spent every spring break, summer, or school hiatus there, i spent many years not just working in the hot sun, but having an absolute ball with my cousins, walking up dirt roads to church, building whatever we could out of whatever we could find, learning the necessity of hard work, the impossibilities of imagination, the importance of faith, and the rewards of perseverance.... I spent all my years with a natural magnetism to go home, home was where you were to be, and work was what you did when you got there.
It was hard work, but hard work was always what was required- and love and laugher was what got you through it! Many summers, you picked up any job you could to earn extra cash- trying to save and contribute.... one of the toughest, but best jobs you could get was bailing hay. It was a hot job, a hard job, honestly- it was brutal, and one that made you think of what generations . before you had to endure..... One summer I managed to get that job bailing hay, and it wasn't just me- cousin Walt, who was a year or two older than me got it too. We worked together, left home together, laughed through the sweat of the Alabama sun together. We rode on the back of the truck together, - stacking hay bails together; sharing all that we had learned with each other together... Our mothers had gone to the same college, Fisk University in Nashville, before I-65 had even been made...... One of the most poignant conversations I had in that wonderful hard life, was on the back of that hay truck.- stacking hay bales, that came flying over the side, while watching to be sure that a rattlesnake wasn't caught in the hay wire.... Cousin Walt looked at the men working with us, easily 20 years our senior. Middle aged Black men, working in Alabama sun, and having no objective way out.... He looked at them, then looked at me, and simply said "man, .... we have got to go to college"- Walter was a bit more aware than me- he could see the bigger picture WAY better than me... but in that moment, I understood. We could NOT be here as middle aged men; bailing hay. College was a way out, it was the means to an end that allowed you to be better, help more, and NOT have to be covered in sweat and hay.
Cousin Walt and I remained close, I visited him in college, and spent thanksgivings at my aunts house (it was closer to where I went to college than home). As adults we saw each other every year grandma was alive at the annual trip home for the holidays. We went to each others weddings, we had a vacation or two together. I had two daughters and he had a son who was just a year behind my youngest. Often times when I would drive home, we would stop by cousin Walt's house in Nashville to say hello, be sure my girls knew their family, or spend an hour or two just laughing at old times..... and then get back on the road to Cincinnati.
Cousin Walt, truth be told, was likely the reason I went to college, and didn't get stuck in that red dirt town. Cousin Walt was my older brother- always sharing a book, recommending some "knowledge" to read, and just last summer we laughed at a pit stop in Nashville, as he told me he had taken a job in the corporate office of Cracker Barrel- funny not funny we thought, because the corporate culture there was about what one would expect from the restaurant experience.
We were close, and it all seemed normal to me. We would text infrequently just to check on each others. Walt came to visit last Summer, and we went to the Cincinnati Music Festival- hanging out in the corporate suite with our wives. We had a chance to take pics with Mary J before she performed... it was the opposite of being sweaty and covered in hay, it. was down right high faultin', it was two country boys being Black and bougie. It was cool to have those moments, and just reflect on where we had come from.
This year, our wives traded COVID stories- washing groceries before they came in the house, what it was like to live with one of those country boys from Monroeville, AL, or when we could all get together again.....
…. Mom called just over a week ago, I could not answer immediately… almost as if my subconscious knew it would not be a normal call. When I called back, t was anything but typical, and the farthest from my expectations. Mom answered, then paused, waited through an awkward silence and finally said in an even, monotone, and defeated voice- "Tysonn, I don't know any other way to tell you, than to just tell you" , and she shared with me that cousin Walter had died.
You will be missed my friend- your hearty laugh, your brilliant smile,...... remembering the trips to Clausell pool, big momma's candy, grand momma's fried pork chops, or the fraught errands to granddaddy's tool shed. You have always been an ever present glue that helped bind the family together- but now you are not here to share with us anymore! -miss you man, and will continue to recall many of the conversations and laughs we had.

Words cannot express how sad we are to hear of the passing of Tosh. He was a kind, loving and caring man who we loved very much.
Among our fondest memories were our vacations together, our visits to Ft Washington, his marriage to you, Orena and the birth of our handsome nephew, Ethan.

On behalf of Lonzie Greene the third and the Greene family, we offer condolences due to the passing of our cousin Tosh. A fond memory that I have of my cousin is when he visited Dallas during a summer while I was in high school. We shared my room for several days and I remember before bed how we would discuss our taste in rap music among other things. I communicated with him some of the struggles that I was dealing with as a young man coming up, along with challenges I experienced based on the hue of my skin. I remember him reassuring me and easing some of my insecurities I had at the time, given that he had himself been in similar situations, and was able to explain how he navigated them. That short stint during the summer left an imprint on my life, and eventhough I didn't spend much time with my cousin in this lifetime, if the small amount of time with him touched me the way it did, and if it was any indication of who he was as a human, then I imagine the great impact he had on others he came across along his journey, and how he will be missed because of it. Rest well cousin.

"The Broken Chain"
by Ron Tranmer
"We little knew that day, God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories. Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again."

God develops us in the incredible character of patience by being with us through suffering. Our character is formed in a furnace of affliction no suffering no character! We need to recognize that in this place of suffering there's a lot of praying, questions and tears, but as David says in Psalms.... Weeping may last through the night but joy comes in the morning!!!
