He forewent his senior year of high school to enroll in the United States Army, but after serving honorably in the United States Army for a number of years, he then enrolled in night courses at Watkins School and completed his last year of his high school education. He leaves a lasting legacy to his family: his wife of fifty-two years, Norma J. Cooper; his brother, Freddie [Doris] Sawyers; his son, William M.
