I'll never forget the first time I saw Yusef, it was at a party at Vanderbilt University. He looked so exotic in his African clothing and I was mesmerized with his hair and beard. He asked me to dance, we did, we had an on and off relationship for years. I was so in love with this intelligent man and I never said the words. After he came back from D.C. one summer, he called me and asked me to come over, I did. I cried when I heard these words from him and he knew I was crazy about him too. He married, had a son , broke my heart and I left Nashville the following year to become a flight attendant. A year later I visited his bookstore to see him and when I saw his reflection in the mirror, my heart was beating so hard, I never experienced a feeling like that before. We chatted, he asked me if I had a boyfriend, I said yes. He wanted to see a picture of him, I obliged and he said "let's get married and have a baby girl,". Continuing, "she'll look like you" and I responded, "and have your hair". Yusef was the love of my life. I never married, I never said yes to any man. I did congratulate Yusef on his book. Love may be the next lifetime. Pam

Joey (Yusef) was definitely one of a kind. It was an honor knowing him my whole life. I'm glad we met thru the special friendship & connection his parents made with my grandparents when they all lived on Tamarack Triangle. By default, he was extended family! Even though he left MD to relocate to Nashville, TN , we "kept up with him" thru updates from Mrs. & Mr. Harris. They were so proud of his entrepreneur accomplishments over the years. I admired his humble spirit & ability to laugh & joke while having an enormous amount of knowledge within him to share whenever we saw or spoke with one another. He was so "down to earth", easy to get along with & compassionate about all that he believed in. He loved his family & was so proud to be Jordan's father. His legacy & memory will continue on thru his son, brother, sister in law, nephew, niece, me & all he mentored. Joey (Yusef), You ran your race well & til we meet again....Rest in peace, Love CeeCee Harrison & the whole Newsome Family
P.S.- David & Kim,
You all know the # if you need anything. Jordan, you are our family too, don't hesitate to call.

Yusef and I begin working (as neighbors) festivals in the early 2000s. He had his books and me tee shirts. Oftentimes people would assume we were related... on one occasion I must have said, "no we're not brothers, just friends". Once the patron had walked off Yusef said to me, "why did you say we weren't brothers-We Are"!
That must have been over 10-12 years ago but that's what always comes to mind when I think of Brother Yusef... to him ALL his people were his brothers & sisters!
Bar none Yusef was my closest confidant! I will miss his genuine, calm demeanor.
Thank you Brother Yusef for making me a better Man, entrepreneur & lover of our people! Rest in power my friend... you left an indelible mark on this world!

Yusef was more than a close friend, he was a Brother to me for over 60 years. Our families were very close literally from the time we both were toddlers. We grew up together and were very close throughout our teen years. We shared our dreams, innermost thoughts, and had many adventures together. During our college years, I went to visit him at Morehouse in Atlanta, and he visited me in Los Angeles. During the holidays, we partied, traveled, and got into all kinds of "fun" together. Yusef and I journeyed to Jamaica for the first time in the mid 1970s, to Senegal in 1978, and to Ethiopia and Kenya with another close friend in 1981. After the Ethiopia/Kenya trip, we brainstormed, and both moved down a business path of linking Africa to African-Americans. I was there with him in Nashville soon after he opened Alkebu-Lan Images Bookstore. I have lived in Africa since 1984, and my Brother Yusef came to visit me on multiple trips, including to South Africa and Kenya. We also had an amazing trip to Thailand. I had a video chat with Yusef on New Years Eve three days before his passing, and although I could see he was not well, we laughed and reminisced about some of our most special adventures together.
Over the years, Yusef was a leader and innovator in advancing empowerment, and education of Black communities in Nashville and across the USA. He was a voice, instrument and example of Black pride. Yusef also was a very caring person, with an uplifting and positive spirit and attitude, and a mind that was always exploring new paths.
May you rest in peace my Brother. Words cannot express how much I will miss you. I will always cherish the vivid memories of our brotherhood, friendship and many special times together.

Wow I just called Mr. Harris during Christmas to order a new Christmas book that was written by a black author. He didn't have the book, but he stated he could order it. I didn't realize that would be the last time I would talk to him. He was gracious enough to hold a spot for me when I decided at the last minute to sell my bags for TSU homecoming "TheReturn". The shipment came the week before. To the Harris family, the community has lost a great man. He will be missed. I am sorry for your loss.

To the Harris Family-
Words cannot express how saddened I am by the lost of Brother Yusef. He was my Nashville family when I had none, my mentor when I sought help or advice, and the most interesting person I've ever worked for! I learned so much from Yusef! I would have never been able to finish at Fisk without Yusef allowing me to bring my daughter to work everyday; and she was just a little baby at the time. She used to tear up that store too! But, Yusef never got upset. That just goes to speak for his true character and authentic commitment to community. Ahhhhhhh... I have so many, many WONDERFUL and HILARIOUS memories about Yusef. We worked together nearly every single day for over 5 years!! He was my bridge to the entire Nashville community who truly embraced me during my time there. I just have so much love for this man. I can not stop sobbing, but I know he is now with the ancestors and the most high.
This truly feels like the end of an era. I will ALWAYS BE PROUD to have worked at Alkebu-lan with Yusef from 1997-2002... proud to have known him as well as I did, and to have shared TRUE brotherly love with him. And, it is just so heart warming and reassuring of the kind of man that he was, that SO MANY people feel the same exact way as I do. My Alkebu-lan days with Yusef were some of the best days of my life. Much love to Jordan...I wish you could feel this hug all the way from Philadelphia. Your dad was a great kind man who will always be remembered and greatly missed.
Peace, love, and prayers

Yousef Harris was an amazing man. He was more than a business associate, he was my dear friend.
When I came to him as a new author, he was extremely receptive to carrying my book in Alkebu Lan Images bookstore, not knowing me at all! From there he and I developed a great friendship, and when I asked him to have my book signing at his store in the middle of the pandemic, he was fully supportive.
He was very kind, caring, intelligent. The world has lost a King. Thank you, family, for sharing Yousef with the us.
