I knew her as Sr. Maria Crucis, my Freshman homeroom and English teacher at Alvernia High School. She had me learn my grammar and punctuation so that I could present a clear canvas with ably handled tools for my imagination-creations. She liked to read to us and modeled how to tell a story. In one corner of our apricot colored homeroom she had what I called,"the sunset madonna of the flame red flower." And she counseled me that painting my pale eyebrows a dark auburn was not a good look for a pale orange haired fourteen year old. Often she let us see her visionary's passionate love for her Beloved, her partner in life, Jesus. Life lessons. Even her choice to go to Costa Rica as a missionary in my Junior Year (which left me bereft) was the loving dramatic kinda of image she set for us. I drew pictures of me standing at the edge of the tip of Lake Michigan, watching her walk with a burro in the far Southern land of Costa Rica, where it turns out she led the way to the reform of the whole public school education system as open to all, rich and poor. And I remember, her accepting the paper chrysanthemum of this shy 14 year old and saying, *Yes-s-s-s."

Sister Sandra dedicated her life to helping the poor and at-risk children. She continued this journey until her last days. I have never met a more selfless person. She lived her faith, and we are all better people for knowing her. I loved Sister Sandra dearly and will miss her so much. <3

Sister Sandra was dedicated to educating our youth and being a mentor to all. I was privileged to serve as a teacher under her tutelage at Smithson Craighead Academy. She was an inspiration to me because no matter her age, she was there to help in any capacity. She is loved and will be missed by many.

Sr. Maria Crucis was my freshman year English teacher at alvernia high school in Chicago. My first assignment was to fall in love with a blade of grass and write about it. What an incredible teacher! Her book From Out of the Shadows was faith affirming. So glad she was part of my life. Terry Bock Cichon, class of 1966.

Sister Sandra shared her love and wisdom with so many people of all ages and walks of life. You knew from the first conversation with her that she was a messenger of God. I am blessed to have spent time in her present at SCA and Project Reflect, INC. May God continue to bless this family and all of her projects.
