Obituary of Mary Jean Hancock

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mrs. Mary Jean Evans-Hancock was born to the late Rev. Roosevelt and Mary Evans on August 12, 1933 in Nashville, TN.  She passed away on November 9, 2022. She was preceded in death by parents and siblings, Lucille (Warren) Dean, Roosevelt (Juanita) Evans, Charlesetta (William) Mills, Helen (James) Currie; her son, Nyanza S. Turner and her grandson, John T Morrow.

Mary graduated from Pearl High in Nashville and attended Fisk University. Her love for children and her gentle ways lead her to work for the Metro Nashville School board. During her career with the government she was Special Education Teacher, Secretary for the Metro Board of Education and a Librarian.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist church where her late father was the Pastor. She sang in Choir #2 and was a member of the Jolly Service Workers. She later joined Center of Faith where Rev. Michael Graves was her Pastor. Mary is known for giving of her time to help in the church wherever needed.

Mary was fondly called Jean by her family.  She is known for her talent as a seamstress; making prom dresses for her nieces, suits for her father and outfits for countless others.  She was a giving person and when she saw a need to help, she reached out and helped.  After she retired from the government, she often worked alongside of her husband at Richland Country Club.

Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 35 years Willie Hancock, her daughter, Cheryl (Stanley) Brown, her sons, John F. Turner, Darryl L. Turner and William (Rosie) Black; siblings, Wallace C. Evans, Roger W. (Gloria) Evans, Rufus O. (Yvonne), Paul A. (Willia) Evans; and brother-in-law, James Currie; three Grandchildren Kenya (Joseph) Carter, Keith (Amera) Morrow and Jamie Turner, six great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and many wonderful  friends at Richland Country Club.
