Obituary of Yvonne V. Buchanan

Please share a memory of Yvonne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Yvonne V. Buchanan, beloved mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away on November 6, 2023 at the age of 88. Born on June 20, 1935 in Nashville, TN to Augusta Goodrich and William Matthews, Yvonne was the  second of three children. Yvonne was wed in holy matrimony to Fred Buchanan and of that union they were blessed with a daughter, Erica.

Yvonne's commitment to her faith was reflected in her baptism at a young age under the leadership of Rev. F. M. Corder at Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. Her devotion to God remained a constant throughout her life, providing her with strength, hope, and solace. Guided by her unwavering faith in God, Yvonne was a life member of Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a devoted choir member until her health started declining.

She served as a greeter and assisted with the Peanuts Choir.  Yvonne's love for gospel music was evident in her participation in choirs to include the BC&M Mass Choir, The Johnson Ensemble, Choir #3 and the Voices of Mt. Gilead.

Yvonne was employed by Sue Bridgeforth at the New Era Club. She had to have the Tennessean newspaper every day to look at the obituaries and decide which funeral she might attend. When she was not going to funerals, she was going to hear some gospel group sing no matter where they may have been.  We would be remised not to mention that she thought she was the best driver in Nashville, and that was far from being true.  Even after she became ill she was still talking about buying a car.

Yvonne was educated at Johnson Elementary, Cameron, and a  graduate of Pearl  Sr. High School class of 1953. She was an avid skater and dancer and loved people.

Adaptable, empathetic, funny, and outgoing were just a few of Yvonne's best qualities that endeared her to all who knew her. Her vibrant personality lit up any room she entered, always ready with a warm smile or a witty remark that brought joy to those around her.

Yvonne is preceded in death by her parents, Augusta Goodrich and William Matthews; surrogate mother, Ellen E. Taylor; brother, Marcellus Hall; sister, Georgia Bender-Hayes.

She leaves to cherish her memories daughter, Erica Y. Buchanan; grandson, Corey Buchanan; and great grandchildren, Quinton Dean and Nova Buchanan; beloved sisters, Ina C. Nichols, Norma Lee Wilson; nieces and nephews, Leslie (Rod) Redmon, Marie Maddix, Gail Williams, Annette Flemings, Antonio (Patrice) Bender, Antionette Batts, Yolanda (JaDon) Foster, Fred (Vanessa) Bender, Monica Bender, Micheal (Ceteka) Gooch, Michael (Mary) Wilson,  a number of great great  nieces and nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she find eternal peace in the embrace of her Heavenly Father.
